Sustainable Design - Designing Sustainable Products and Services Conference

Luke Palmer, Senior Designer at Orangebox and Dr Frank O’Connor, EDC Director, delivered a presentation on implementing ecodesign, focusing on the award winning ecodesigned Ara chair, at the Sustainable Design - Designing Sustainable Products and Services Conference.

The event, organised by the British Standards Institute (BSI), was held on the 16th June 2009 at the CBI Conference Centre, London. It showcased research best practice, promoted the role of standards in design and highlighted organisations that are leading the way in sustainable design implementation.

The presentation, titled "No green bull", focussed on how EDC and Orangebox are continuing to work together to embed ecodesign and life cycle thinking in the company’s culture through creating ecodesigned products with a (life cycle) plan.

Once again the event highlighted the need to showcase more companies, in particular SMEs, who are implementing ecodesign, and not just talking about it! The EDC-Orangebox presentation received excellent feedback as it was one of the few current and inspiring practical examples of ecodesign being implemented in the manufacturing sector. It is also widely accepted that it is much better to hear the story directly from the company, rather than through a third party.
