Slow is Beautiful Conference November 2008

"We have set speed as the measure by which our affairs are judged and so we are running down the gifts of nature faster than they can be replenished and we find ourselves with serious problems - climate change, an energy crisis, a financial crisis, overwork and personal stress."
Tony Weekes, Irish Times 2008

EDC were invited to make a presentation on the topic of “slow design” at the Slow is Beautiful Conference held 14-16 November 2008 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. This conference was organised by Tony Weekes of Queens University Belfast and hosted by Drumalis House.

The conference involved presentations by a range of speakers on various issues related to sustainability, well-being and slow food. Among the other speakers were Alma Clavin, Oxford Brookes University, who gave an insightful presentation on the connection between the ecological design of urban spaces and well-being. Another speaker was Professor and Author Jules Pretty who gave a talk on the context of place, memory and human connectivity to the earth.

The presentation by EDC incorporated a number of points on the relationships we have (as designers and consumers) with products and how these relationships can allow for dialogues around sustainable issues.
